Dorothy Ellen Spitler Alexander died on Saturday, May 27, 2017 after a brief illness. Her family supported her passing with great love and respect.
Born on January 16, 1921 in Arcanum, Ohio to the late Eliza Ellen Spitler and Forest Jacob Spitler, Dorothy was their first child with four siblings to follow. Most of her childhood was in Dayton Ohio with frequent visits to family farms. She had fond memories of those visits. Dorothy and Dean Alexander married on Dec. 20, 1939 and had three daughters, Deanna, Judy and Jo. Eventually they moved to their new home in Bellmont, a suburb of Dayton and remained there most of their lives. Dorothy loved children and decided to babysit to sublimit the family income. Her home was always a beacon for all children. There were rules to be followed, but there was always good food, much laughter and encouragement to be children.Dorothy is survived by her brother Omer Barowsky; daughter Ellen Jo Brown and her husband Jon; four grandchildren, Amy Costello (Lou), Patrick Leadingham (Heather), Joe Graham (Becky) and Dave Brown (Liz); six great grandchildren, Nick Nelson, Megan Nelson, Oscar Graham, Nell Graham, Sawyer Graham and Alexander Brown and many nieces and nephews who brought great joy into her life.In addition to her parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Dean; daughters Deanna Rae Leadingham and Judith Lee Graham; sisters Donna Soward and Elizabeth McClure and brother Forest Spitler, Jr. A graveside celebration of Dorothy's life will take place at 11am on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Highland Cemetery, Covington Ohio. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Dorothy's name to St. Jude's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis,TN 38105. "Dorothy loved the babies"
