Dorothy June Brown passed away from this life on Thursday, August 3, 2017, at the age of 86. Born in Oxford, England, Dorothy emigrated to the U. S. in the 1950s. She settled in Houston, Texas and worked for the British Consulate. As an experienced singer in England and an aspiring opera singer, she joined Houston’s Gilbert and Sullivan Society, became a soloist for several area churches, and auditioned for the music department at the University of Houston. It was performing the lead role in the opera Carmen at U of H that she met her musical soulmate, Gordon Brown. A contralto, she studied with voice coaches at Indiana University at Bloomington while performing in several of their opera productions.

After moving to New Orleans, she sang at Christ Church Cathedral for several years, assisted with her husband’s choral events at Xavier University and toured the area schools as a member of Opera on the Half Shell, introducing elementary students to opera. She also worked closely with the Marshall family of New Orleans assisting with many arts festivals at Madewood Plantation. Eventually, she joined her husband in coaching and teaching voice and piano students in their home.

She is survived by her children, Valerie Menowsky and Christopher Brown, and her grandchildren, Katie and Jeffrey Menowsky, and Kelsey and Rachel Brown. Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Brown, and sister, Kathleen Barr.
