Dorothy L. Johnston (nee Sherpe) December 31, 2017, age 88 years. Beloved wife of the late Norbert Johnston. Loving mother of Kathy (Clyde) Schafer and Tom Johnston. Also survived by other relatives and friends. Heaven gained another Angel on Sunday. My mother peacefully passed away at night after her long battle with dementia and Alzheimer’s. My Mom was a loving, giving, hard working woman who always faced life’s challenges with determination and a confident outlook. First and foremost she was 100% Norwegian and proud of her heritage. Her favorite word was Uff da! A Norwegian phrase meaning “oh that was hard”. She came from a large family. She was the youngest of 6 children. She talked often about her childhood in Coon Valley, Wisconsin. She would talk about helping to harvest the tobacco leaves, hanging them to dry, and then stripping them during the cool foggy weather of December. And yes she talked about walking 5 miles to school daily. In the winter her Dad would walk ahead of them shoveling a path through the snow that was hip deep! She was a devoted friend, wife, mother, and Grammy. She always gave a 100% of herself. When we first adopted Charlie in 1988 she traveled to our home from Milwaukee to take care of Charlie two days a week so I could work part time. She worked for 42 years for Wisconsin Bell telephone company. As with everything else she gave her job a 100%. She started as a phone operator working various shifts to her final position as an employment interviewer traveling all over the state of Wisconsin giving career talks to high schools and interviewing individuals for employment positions. She retired in 1990 at the age of 60 to devote her time to being Grammy to Charlie and Katie. She again gave 100% of herself. She made outfits for Charlie and Katie and would help taking care of them when we needed help. Most importantly she was a wonderful loving mother who was always there for my brother and I when we needed her. Anyone wishing to honor Mom’s memory can do so by donating to Alzheimer’s Association alz.org We Love you Mom!
