Dorothy Worrell

April 9, 1948 – July 15, 2017

Dorothy Worrell (MacKinnon), age 69 of Tampa, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at her home surrounded by loved ones, after her valiant fight with melanoma cancer. Her strong will to live, unwavering faith in God, and the love and prayers of family and friends, carried her through the battle with this disease. Throughout her struggle with cancer, she managed to continue spreading her love and sharing her infectious laughter with her loved ones. She continued living life to the fullest as she traveled visiting many beautiful cities and countries around the world. Throughout the battle, Dorothy was the lady she always was and we all admired and loved.

Known for her ease in frequent conversation and the need to have all the details, some may be surprised to learn of the extreme shyness of her youth. Yet even as a child, she possessed a contagious smile, an infectious laugh, and an entertaining sense of humor. Throughout her life she maintained a sweet demeanor that won the trust and hearts of many, while growing into the spicy, strong woman most of us know today. Her signature gift of dance, shown through her constant love of music and dancing, will never be forgotten. Whether it was in the car with the sunroof open, music up loud with hands in the air, or on the dance floor anywhere, she could hear music.

She was born to the late Mann I. MacKinnon and Lois McCormick MacKinnon on April 9, 1948 in Goldsboro, North Carolina. She grew up in south Tampa and attended Plant High School, graduating with honors. Her career was with the Social Security Administration, retiring after 32 years of devoted service. She remained very close to her dear friends she made during her career. They continued with monthly lunches and trips. She became a sought after line dancer, performing at various events making treasured friends with their mutual love of music and dance. Dorothy was a member of the Idlewild Baptist Church in Lutz.

She is survived by her husband, Robert C. Worrell, Jr. and former husband, Robert L. Youngblood; her children, Robert C. Worrell III (Robbie) and wife, Ginger; son, Gregory S. Worrell; and daughter Michele D. Worrell; her brothers, James G. MacKinnon and Mann I. MacKinnon, Jr . (Bubba), as well as many loving stepchildren, adoring grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many loving extended family members.

Visitation for friends and family will be held Wednesday, July 19, 2017 from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM with a prayer service officiated by Pastor Greg Murphy of Idlewild at 7:00 PM at Blount & Curry Funeral Home of Carrollwood. A Graveside Service will be held Thursday, July 20, 2017 from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM at Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home in Clearwater.

To honor Dorothy, the family is asking for everyone to wear an animal print accessory to the visitation.
