Dorothy Virginia Schrader, 95, of East Ridge, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 11, 2017. She died peacefully at her home surrounded by her family. She was a woman who loved her family and work. These two things are what kept her thriving for 95 years. She began working with her dad in the family roofing business (J.D. Helton Roofing Company) in 1937 at the age of 15. For the next 80 years she devoted her life to the family business. She had the privilege to work alongside her father, brothers, sons, and grandchildren. She served as Secretary/Treasurer of J.D. Helton Roofing Company until her death. She was a prominent figure for women in the construction field in Chattanooga. She served as past president of Women in Construction and in 1972 was awarded the honor of Woman of the Year. She was a member of Crosspath Church (East Ridge Baptist) where she was a member of the Chapel Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jason and Tennie Helton; husband, Jessie "Bud" Schrader; son, Edward Schrader; and siblings, Edith Helton, Roy Helton, Helen Emerson, Granville Helton, J.R. Helton, Emmett Helton and Benny Helton. She is survived by her son, Herman (Mary) Schrader; daughter in law, Deborah Schrader; grandchildren, Starr Schrader, Scott Schrader, and Todd Schrader; 7 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great- grandson; siblings, Gene Helton, Eula Mae Russell, and Richard Helton; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Tuesday at Crosspath Church with the Rev. William Jacques officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South. The family will receive friends from 4-8 PM Monday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Road. The family would like to extend sincere gratitude to Starr Schrader, Abby Hill, Barbara Shinn, and Patty Sager for the abounding love and care they gave Dorothy in her final months. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Chattanooga or the East Ridge Forgotten Child Fund.
