Douglas J. Wetherby NEW SALEM- Douglas J. Wetherby, 71, formerly of Lovers Lane and the Providence Cliff Residence in Athol, died on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at Leominster Hospital after being stricken ill earlier at Hillcrest Nursing and Rehabilitation. Born in Montague on July 24, 1938, he was a son of the late Louie and Viola (Cadrette) Wetherby, and graduated from New Salem Academy in June of 1956. Doug grew up and worked the Wetherby Farm, later going to work at Erving Paper Mill and then becoming a union carpenter, working in construction. He was married to Helen (Marshall) on November 22, 1958 and he adored her unconditionally for 45 years until her death on January 22, 2004. A devoted and loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he was affectionately known as "Father Goose", "Paw", "Papa Paw", and "Great Pop", and will also be known for his humor. Doug was an avid reader and had also enjoyed hunting, fishing, horseshoes, watching his kids and grandkids sporting events, and playing bingo. Throughout most of his life, he tended to a large vegetable garden. Survivors include his son, Clayten Wetherby and his wife, Pauline, of Fitchburg; daughters, Leisa Yurko and her husband, Daniel, of Orange, Kathreen MacLean and her husband, Richard, of Spencer, Rebecca Osowski and her husband Edward, of Erving, Melissa Campbell and her husband, Hugh, of Millers Falls, and Nicole Poirier and her husband, James, of Orange; grandchildren, Brad Whitney, Michael Whitney, Cindy Cunningham, Adam MacLean, Faith Stein, Rachel Lyon, Sarah Wetherby, Amanda Farrick, Mathew Osowski, Alexander Osowski, Christopher McMahon, Timothy McMahon, Jamie Campbell, Brian Campbell, Carolyn Campbell, Alicia Poirier, Breanna Poirier, Launa Carter, Lawrence P. Gravelle, Tammy Gravelle, Travis Gravelle, and Kimberly Gravelle; great grandchildren, Alexa Whitney, Isaiah Herandez, Daniel Herandez, Isabelle Farrick, Ian Farrick, Kailey Cunningham, Kyle Cunningham, and another one due next month; a brother, Bruce Wetherby of New Salem; sisters, Barbara Jacopetti of Alabama and Lin Wetherby of Puerto Rico. Besides his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a sister, Verna Hardaker. Visitation will be held Saturday morning, May 29th from 9-10 a.m. at Witty's Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 10 a.m. following visitation. Interment will be in South Cemetery, Orange.
