Edelgard Merckens Cooper, of Woodstock, GA, passed away June 26, 2017 at the age of 94. She was born in Monchengladbach, Germany on August 14, 1922 and resided in Miami, FL and San Francisco, CA before moving to Georgia to be with family. She was a pediatric nurse assisting her father in his practice in Monchengladbach. At the end of World War II in the tiny German town of Zinhain, she met the love of her life, an American soldier, Denver Sheridan Cooper. In 1947, she became the first German war bride in Miami, FL. They were married for sixty years before he preceded her into Heaven. She was a devout Christian and an amazing woman who dearly loved her children, their spouses and all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Vickie & Bruce Milne of Marietta, Hildegard & Robert Schanck of Marietta, Stephanie & Charles Posey of Marietta and Christopher Cooper of Benicia, CA; her grandchildren, Cindy & Jon Terry; Amy & Chad Tichgelaar; Katie Schanck; Nicholas, Erika, Jonathan, Michael and AnnaMarie Posey; Christopher Jr., Elizabeth and Jordan Cooper; and her great-grandchildren Emily, Denver, Benjamin and Austin. Her life was a true testament of love and devotion to God and her family. Graveside Services will be held Thursday morning June 29, 2017 at 10:30 am at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA.
