Shankland, Edith R.
72, of Ahwatukee passed away on August 14, 2014. Edy was born in Pampa, TX, on July 7, 1942, the first child of Ralph and Elaine West. Her early years were spent in Amarillo, TX, where she attended St. Mary's Academy from the first through 11th grades. In 1956, her family moved to Phoenix, where she attended and graduated from Xavier High School. Edy studied at Arizona State University, where she served as social chairman and president of the Gamma Phi Beta chapter and met her sweetheart Richard Shankland. In 1964, she graduated from ASU with a degree in education and married Richard. The newlyweds moved to Stockton, CA, where both began teaching with Stockton Unified School District. Edy, who was recognized as an outstanding and dedicated educator, taught first and second grades for the majority of her career. In 1995, she retired and moved back to Phoenix, residing with her husband in Ahwatukee. She was a parishioner at Corpus Christi Catholic Church and actively involved with the Ahwatukee Recreation Center. Sadly, Richard preceded her in death in 2007. Edy is survived by her brothers, Jerry West (Audry) of Bay City, TX, and Ed West of San Diego, CA; her children Scott Shankland (Roxanne) of Arroyo Grande, CA, and Darcy Shankland Seinsheimer (Wally); and her grandchildren, Zoe and Razi Shankland of Arroyo Grande, CA. A memorial mass will be held on Thursday, August 21 at 10 a.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 3550 E. Knox. Rd., Phoenix, AZ, 85044. A celebration of her life will follow at Ahwatukee Rec Center, 5001 E. Cheyenne Dr., Ahwatukee.
