Edmond Eugene Havel, 83, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Thursday, May 18, 2017. Born January 17, 1934 in Corpus Christi, Texas to Edmund W. and Mary S. (Marek) Havel, Ed enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting with his many friends and extended family. He attended and played football at W.B. Ray High School in Corpus Christi before moving to Houston, Texas in 1953.

Ed was a professional installer of floor coverings, owning and operating Criterion Carpets in Houston for over 40 years. Throughout his career, Ed installed carpets and tile in numerous residential and businesses throughout many of the affluent neighborhoods in the Houston and Galveston areas, including several maintenance and remodeling projects at the iconic Shamrock Hilton.

Known as "Sonny" by his family, Ed often referred affectionately to others as "child". Quick-witted and full of one-liners, Ed had nicknames for all his extended family members.

Ed loved his family and friends dearly. Unselfishly and unknowingly to others, he often took time to visit these individuals in their illness or hospitalizations. Whether "child" or the occasional "darlin'", with that drawl in his voice as only Ed could produce, his twinkling eyes would look at you and let you know he loved you. Ed always seemed entirely cheerful and untroubled, with a smile on his face and fun-loving chuckle that giggled out of him often and easily, he tickled and delighted us all.

Fishing and hunting were Ed's passion. He often navigated the bays and intercostal waters of the Texas Gulf Coast in search of "the big ones". Ingleside, Corpus Christi, Port O'Connor, and Galveston were just a few of his favorite fishing holes. Ed also maintained a hunting and fishing lease outside of Jourdanton for over five decades where he and his many hunting buddies could get away and enjoy the outdoors; often ending the evening sharing stories at the "Oasis".

Ed also enjoyed traveling with friends and family. Other than his regular fishing and hunting trips, Ed's travels included Southern California, Cancun, a Caribbean cruise trip, and several day trips to Louisiana in search of a "jack pot". A few of Ed's most memorable travels included a 2004 dove hunting trip to Argentina with his sister Pat; brother-in-law Billy, nephews Wayne and Jim, and Joan; and a 2007 trip to the Grand Bahamas for his great nephew Wayne, Jr's wedding.

Ed is preceded in death by his parents, Edmund and Mary Havel and sister Betty "Cookie" George. He leaves behind sister's Maybelle Farley and Patricia Ann Brock; brothers-in-law Billy Brock and Kirk George; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Ed's final blessing was performed by Fr. Eli Lopez of the St. Cecilia Catholic Community.

Family and friends gathered during a visitation on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 from 4 PM until 7 PM at Waltrip Funeral Directors, 1415 Campbell Road in Houston where chapel services were held at 2 PM on Thursday, May 25, 2017. Interment followed at the Woodlawn Garden of Memories, 1101 Antoine Drive also in Houston.

Honored to serve as pallbearers were nephew's Wayne Brock and Jim Brock; great nephew's Wayne Brock, Jr. and John Dean Havel Brock; Dana Smith, and Sonny Broach. Honorary pallbearers were brothers-in-law Billy Brock and Kirk George; and Jerry Byrd.
