PROSPERITY – A Celebration of Life for Edwin Julius Zobel, III, 80, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 23, 2017, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial following in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 22, 2017 at the funeral home.

Edwin passed away Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at his home, with his son Steve by his side. Born in Florence, he was the son of the late Edwin J Zobel, Jr. and Audrey Pendergrass Zobel.

Mr. Zobel was a 1955 graduate of Eau Claire High School and a 1959 graduate of Wofford College, where he received a degree in Business Administration. He served in the United States Air Force for six months of active duty and seven years with the S.C. Air National Guard. From 1965 to 1969 he was the Executive Director of the Greater Columbia Relations Council, where he assisted in the development of the educational program “Job Man Caravan.” From 1969 to 1971 he was the Finance Director for the Richland County Council, where he managed financial responsibility for all of Richland County. He was Executive Director for the Capital City Development Foundation from 1971 to 1973 and helped projects to revitalize downtown Columbia.

In 1974 he became the Coordinator for Interagency Affairs at the State Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education until his retirement in 2005, where he was responsible for coordinating programs for 16 technical colleges in South Carolina. He worked with TEC legislation committees and subcommittees giving reports on how legislation affected technical education and higher education. Edwin served as technical education information specialist for Governors, Lt. Governors, and other constitutional officers. He worked with the Division of Industrial and Economic Special Schools Development, promoting economic efforts of South Carolina through technical education for new and expanding industries.

Edwin was awarded the prestigious Order of the Palmetto. He was the past Chairman of the Newberry Hospital Foundation, a member of Macedonia Lutheran Church, in Prosperity, S.C. and the “Goldie” Sunday School class. Edwin also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing golf.

Surviving are his son, Edwin J. “Jay” Zobel IV and Stephen Morris Zobel and his wife, Cathy Coleman Zobel; grandchildren, Stephen Joshua “Josh” Zobel, Samantha Maya “Sam” Zobel and Summer Leigh Zobel; and sister, Edna Ratcliff. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Myrtle “Lee” Morris Zobel.
