Edwin Miles Beard, 80 years
Born: October 27, 1933, Thorndale, Texas (Milam County)
Death: August 30th, 2014, Phoenix , Arizona (Maricopa County)


Edwin Beard was the son of Ulric Wyatt & Estelle Smith Beard in the farming community of Thorndale, Texas.


Ed graduated and was Valedictorian from Thorndale High School in 1951. He earned a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas, Austin in 1957, and earned a Masters Degree in Business Management & Finance from Arizona State University In 1973.


He served two years in the US Army from 1953-55 specializing in communications support and radar testing with honorable discharge as Corporal upon his completion of service.


Ed's career began in Arizona working in management and accounting positions with Motorola for 41 years from 1957-1999, in the Government Electronics Division in Scottsdale, AZ and the Iridium Project in Chandler, AZ. Ed was part of the longest known carpooling group with the same 3 Motorola colleagues for over 34 years.


Ed started his service to God at Pleasant Retreat Methodis Church in Salty, TX, was a Charter Member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church and current member of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, both in Tempe, AZ. During his memberships at churches in Tempe, he held financial positions and active with church fundraising and stewardship.


Active in his community, Motorola he was involved with the Motorola Foremans Club, a 4-H Leader in Electronics for the Tempe Happy Homemakers 4-H Club in Tempe and assisted his children with their projects in horticulture, entomology, electricity, speech and gardening, and an Elder at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church. A supporter of ASU, Ed enjoyed having season tickets to ASU Football & Basketball games and to the Arizona Diamondbacks Baseball.


While attending Thorndale High School, he was active in Student Council, Quill & Scroll, Who's Who, Junior & Senior plays, he played the trombone in marching band, Editor of the school paper and annual, and enjoyed playing on the basketball, volleyball, softball and track teams. In his later years he attended all Thorndale High School Class Reunions and Beard Family Reunions each year.


Music was important to Ed and he loved singing and learned to play the piano in church from his mothers sister Gertrude Howe, playing during church services. He enjoyed Gospel music going to concerts of his favorite quartets and was part of his church choir, duets (with his wife Maebell), quartets and octets.


Ed was creative and accomplished as a plumber, auto mechanic, carpenter, artist, farming & gardening. He enjoyed painting & drawing, making stained glass windows and lamps, he designed and assisted in the build of his current residence in Ahwatukee, assisted his wife with challenging quilting projects, and he was and avid dove hunter and fisherman.


He enjoyed travel having explored all of Arizona, much of the US, traveling with his church groups on a Martin Luther Pilgrimage tour to Germany, Australia & New Zealand, and cruising the Western Caribbean and Alaska.


He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 61 years Maebell Faye Heintze Beard, son Brian Beard of Harker Heights, Texas, daughter Cathy Beard Diepenbrock and her husband Robert Diepenbrock of Chandler, Arizona, brother Donald Beard of Golden, Colorado, sister Evelyn Young of Rockdale, Texas and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
