MATTHEWS, Edwina Marie, age 92, passed away on January 15, 2018 in Dayton. Ohio. Born at home, on Sandhurst Drive in Dayton, Ohio, Edwina Matthews was the fifth of six children of Lawrence and Mary Scott. She entered this world on October 26, 1925. Eddie, as she was known, attended Fairview Grade School and High School graduating in 1943. She joined the Cadet Nursing Corps when World War II broke out. After the war, she studied at the Miami Valley School of Nursing graduating in 1947. Then, she was awarded a scholarship for Advanced Study in Nursing at Western Reserve University. She graduated in 1953 becoming the first one in her family to obtain a college degree. During her time at the university, she agreed to attend a school dance with a friend and met her future husband, Lloyd Matthews. She worked as a traveling nurse,bringing health care to underserved communities till she contracted Tuberculosis. She was hospitalized at the Stillwater Sanatorium in Dayton for a year, where Lloyd stood by her side and continued to court her. Given a clean bill of health in 1953, Edwina and Lloyd married. While raising their two children, David and Margaret Matthews Neikirk, Eddie continued to work as a nurse on the Obstetrics ward at Miami Valley Hospital and ultimately as a school nurse in the Dayton Public School system until her retirement in 1985. Eddie's biggest love was family. While her brothers Fred and Jim left the area, her sisters, Alice Behme, and Leota Russell along with her youngest brother, Chuck Scott remained in Dayton and Eddie enjoyed getting the families together. She loved reading, playing Kings in the Corner and Shanghai Rummy, baking cookies and making fudge for everyone and staying involved with Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church. Eddie is survived by her children, son, Dr. David (Kim) Matthews, and daughter Margaret (Wallace) Neikirk; five grandchildren, Dr. Heather (Dale) Cassidy, William Matthews, Lily, Grant and Max Neikirk; two great grandchildren, Bridger and Cody Cassidy; her brother, Chuck (Kate) Scott and a plethora of nieces and nephews. As she entered the gates of Heaven, Eddie was greeted by her husband, Lloyd, her brothers, Fred and Jim Scott, her sisters, Alice Behme and Leota Russell, and her grandchildren, Chris Matthews and Rose Neikirk. The family would like to thank 10 Wilmington Place and Vitos Hospice for their excellent care.A memorial service will be held in Eddie's honor at Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 11am.
