Eleanor I. Mitchell, 94, of Grinnell, died on Tuesday, April 2, 2015, at Windsor Manor in Grinnell.
A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 6, 2015, at the First Friends Church in Grinnell with Todd Follette, pastor of the church, officiating. Music will be provided by Kathy Vander Ploeg. Casket Bearers will be Gina Stocker, Tonya McGuire, Katrina Robinson, Paul Thompson, Shannon Haines, Randon Hill, Haley Hill, Brydon Hill, Cody Kueker, Cassy Kueker and Riley Robinson. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be directed to PALS and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.
Eleanor was born on March 21, 1921, in Bagley, Saskatchewan, Canada to her Swedish immigrant parents, Emil and Annie Johnson Anderson. She spent her childhood in both Bagley and Melfort, Saskatchewan, Canada. She left school in the 8th grade to assist her family with the farm and household duties. At age 21, she moved to Alert Bay, British Columbia to work at a cannery.
She met the love of her life, David Mitchell, at a social club in Alert Bay. The couple was married on March 25, 1943, in Pittsburg, California. She lived in Saskatchewan while David served with the U.S. Army during World War II.
David and Eleanor lived on a farm south of Grinnell until 1952, when they moved into Grinnell and David began work at the Vernon Company in Newton. For many years to come, the couple witnessed their children growing up and making families of their own. Besides being a homemaker, Eleanor worked in the bakery at Hy-Vee.
After their retirement, the couple enjoyed visiting family in Canada, Arizona and Florida. They were active members of the Oak Grove Friends Church and later the First Friends Church in Grinnell. Following David's death in 2008, Eleanor resided at Windsor Manor in Grinnell.
She enjoyed cooking for the family and spending time with them on the holidays.
Survivors include her two daughters, Dianne Smith of Grinnell and Pat (Bob) Thompson of Tucson, AZ; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; and three sisters, Violet Poirier of Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, Alice McLeod of Deland, Florida and Beatrice Cameron of Melfort, Saskatchewan, Canada.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and two brothers, Ervin and Arnold Anderson.
