Waterford - Eleanor Nicholas Hage, 77, of Seabreeze Drive, wife of Elias Joseph Hage, died unexpectedly in Boca Raton, Fla., on Tuesday, March 8, 2011. Eleanor was born on August 14, 1933 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the seventh of eight children to Lebanese immigrants, Naseem and John Nicholas . When John Nicholas died young, Naseem bought a small grocery store from money she made selling rags. It was here that Eleanor developed her bond to family, a tireless work ethic, and a homey sense of humor. A fall down a flight of stairs when she was 14 left Eleanor in a full body cast for a year and a rare genetic condition contributed to a lifetime of physical pain. She refused to let this defeat her. “If I sit down, I might not get up again,” Mrs. Hage quipped when she was asked how she kept going. A strong believer in betterment through education, she received her BA from Our Lady of Cincinnati in 1955 and worked on a professional level for The Girl Scouts of USA. In 1960, she married a high-school teacher, Elias Joseph Hage and moved to his hometown of New London, CT where they raised four children. In 1973, the family moved to Waterford, CT. Eleanor received her MAT from Connecticut College in 1983 and taught History at Mitchell College for 15 years. She and her husband loved to prepare food and entertain family and friends in their home. Mrs. Hage enjoyed reading books and discussing ideas, solving crossword puzzles, playing Scrabble, and engaging in wordplay. She taught herself how to use the computer as a way to save lesson plans and grades for her students and fell in love with the technology. She used the Internet to stay in touch with family and friends. A lifetime helping others Eleanor Hage was a devout Catholic who dedicated her life to helping others not only in the countless meals and baked goods she prepared for individuals and visits to shut-ins, but on a public level as well. Over the years, Mrs. Hage taught homebound instruction to troubled teens, sat as President and member of the Confraternity of Christian Women, was President of the Waterford Women’s Club, coordinated volunteers for the Soup Kitchen in New London, and served for 20 years as coordinator of the New London Area Food Pantry. While wintering in Florida, she volunteered as a docent at the local nature preserve. She had an indomitable will and an uncanny ability to get things done. Once, when she organized a canned food drive for a local charity, she noticed that people had cleaned their shelves of canned pumpkin. “What are poor people going to do with canned pumpkin?” Mrs. Hage asked. She sent everyone in the group home with cans of pumpkin and the instruction to make “Somethin’ Pumpkin” for a bake sale. The group raised over $500, which she then used to buy beans, rice, and meat for the food pantry. It was this kind of resourcefulness that inspired many others to donate their time and money to the causes she supported. No one person can know how many lives she has changed for the better. “Nothing was more important to her than her children, grandchildren, and her faith,” said her husband of 50 years. She is survived by her husband, her four children: Joseph Elias Hage, John Luke Hage, Sarah Marie Hage, and Catherine Ann Hage; five grandchildren: Lukas Hage, Joelle Hage, Isabelle Hage, Giuliana Hage, and Gabriela Hage, one sister Antoinette Nicholas Reilly and many nieces and nephews. The funeral will assemble at 10:15 A.M. Monday at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London, and proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated in St. Joseph Church at 11 A.M. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery. Calling hours are Sunday from 5- 8 P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Joseph’s School in New London or the Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London. Please visit www.neilanfuneralhome.com for directions or to send a condolence message to the Hage family.
