Elizabeth "Sis" Charlotte Newnam Hamilton, 92, was a loving and devoted wife, aunt, sister, and friend, who departed from this life on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at Whitestone Masonic and Eastern Star Home in Greensboro.
Funeral services to celebrate Sis's life will be held at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm St. Chapel in Greensboro. A reception will follow at the funeral home immediately following the service. Elizabeth will be laid to rest next to her husband during a private entombment at Lakeview Memorial Park Mausoleum on Thursday, June 7, 2017.
Born in Rockingham County on October 31, 1924, to the late John Harvey Newnam and Sara Edna Baughn Newnam, Sis was one of five children, all of whom preceded her in death. She excelled in school graduating with honors from Stoneville High School in 1941 at the age of 16. Elizabeth then attended King's Business College in Greensboro and actually completed the 2 year program in just one year. At the age of 17 she accepted a job with Southern Bell Telephone Company. With her dynamic work ethic, by the time she turned 18 she was elected to the Board of Directors and was appointed as Secretary of the newly founded Tri-City Telco Credit Union, (now Summit Credit Union). She was the credit union's CEO for 60 years and served on the board of directors for 70 years, making her the longest serving credit union volunteer in U. S. history. Her career gained her numerous accolades in the credit union industry, including the 2003 prestigious Order of the Longleaf Pine and the 2007 Larry Johnson Order of Merit Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest award presented to the NC credit union leaders. In 2012 she was named North Carolina Credit Union Volunteer of the Year. In addition to her parents Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, James "Jim" Vance Hamilton; sister, Alice Newnam Stone; and her brothers, Harvey, David, and Floyd Newnam.
Those left to cherish her memory include her sisters-in-law, Alma Dean Newnam of Stoneville, NC and Arlene Newnam of Greensboro; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers and in keeping with Elizabeth and Jim's strong belief in the value of education, memorial contributions are suggested to The Elizabeth N. and James Hamilton Scholarship Fund, c/o Summit Credit Union, 8210 W. Market St., Greensboro, NC 27409.
The family would like to thank the staff of Whitestone for their kindness and care shown to Sis and her family during her residence there. Also, heartfelt thanks to the caring staff of Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro.
