COLUMBIA - Elizabeth “Lib” Gillam Felkel, 90, died on Sunday, February 19, 2017. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Shandon Baptist Church with the Reverend Dennis Banks officiating. Visitation will immediately follow the service at the church. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.



Mrs. Felkel was the daughter of the late Walter Benjamin and Pearl Odom Gillam. She was born in Denmark, S.C. on October 18, 1926 and lived there until age 7. Her father died when she was three and a half years old. In 1933, she moved with her mother and brother to Springfield, S.C., where she grew up in the home of her grandmother Odom. After graduating from Springfield High School in 1943, she enrolled in USC School of Nursing, a five year program in conjunction with Columbia Hospital School of Nursing. She and two others graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. She had many and various positions in nursing and began teaching in 1959 at Orangeburg Hospital School of Nursing. She later taught at Columbia Hospital School of Nursing and University of South Carolina two year nursing program. In 1973, Midlands Technical College opened a program for practical nursing where she taught until her retirement in 1986.



She was a member of the American Nurses Association and the National League of Nursing for many years. She volunteered with Children’s Garden, Sister Care, and Epworth Children’s Home. She enjoyed a small rose garden and fishing with her husband. She was an active member of Shandon Baptist Church.



Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, William Ray Cooper (Beth); stepdaughter, Suzanne F. Owens; granddaughter, Dorothy Louise Arnold; and stepson, Fred W. Felkel III. She was predeceased by her husband, Fred W. Felkel Jr. and brother, Walter Odom Gillam.



In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Epworth Children’s Home, 2900 Millwood Avenue, Columbia, SC 29205. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
