The last of many long, beautiful breaths was taken by Elizabeth "Betty" M. Herzog 97, a longtime resident of Westmoreland, NH, with the ending of her earthly journey in the early morning hours of October 2, 2017.

She was born on March 7, 1920, in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of John J. and Delia E. (McKenzie) Mathiot. She was one of 6 children, all of whom died earlier.

Betty created many special memories growing up in Brooklyn. She attended local schools and began work early as a cashier in the local 5 and dime store. This first job worked out well but when Pearl Harbor was bombed our entry into the war caused her to want to do more for her country. So in 1942 she applied for work at the Sperry Corporation in Lake Success, NY. Sperry was a federal government contractor that designed and built gyroscopes, among other things. When they suggested that she be a clerk "upstairs" she refused and said that she wanted to work "downstairs" to have a meaningful wartime role. She spent the next 25 years assembling the complex and delicate gyroscopes used in military planes.

She and her husband Bill visited the Walpole area frequently and in 1965 decided to purchase property in Westmoreland, NH where they ultimately retired. Over the years, one could find Betty volunteering at Maplewood Nursing Home and making many friends in the community. She enjoyed day trips with friends, eating pancakes, sausages with loads of maple syrup at Stuart's and John's in Westmoreland and cherished the friendship and compassion of her neighbors and friends who helped her live and remain in her home in Westmoreland. Betty was devoted to her husband Bill. After his death, she adopted a cat named 'Tippy' that she cared for and who followed her to Maplewood Nursing Home where the Activities staff and volunteers continued to care for Tippy until Tippy's recent passing.

A special recognition to Bruce and Sandy Cote, longtime neighbors to Betty and Bill for their neighborly care and support through the years as well as to Missy Blanchard, the Maplewood Nursing Home staff where Betty found a new home and two longtime friends Aylene and Jack Wozmak.

She is survived by her nieces Joanne Donnelly of Croton, New York, Maryann Duclos of North Pembroke, Massachusetts, Christine Palumbo of Watertown, New York, Peggy Connelly of Winnabow, North Carolina and Camille Terhune of Fairbanks, Alaska.
Her husband of 44 years William G. Herzog, died on August 2, 2000.

A celebration of Betty's life will be held on Friday, October 6th at 11:30am at St. Margaret Mary's Catholic Church on Arch Street in Keene. Burial will follow the celebration of life service in the Village Cemetery, Glebe Road, Westmoreland, NH, at 2:30pm. Family and friends are invited to call on the family from 10am to 11am at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene, NH.
