COLUMBIA - Mrs. Elizabeth P. Smith, 98, widow of Paul A. Smith, Sr. died on Wednesday, April 12, 2017. Born in Society Hill, S.C., on May 17, 1918, she was the youngest daughter of Jesse Kennedy Parrott and Margaret Catherine McCall Parrott.
Mrs. Smith was a graduate of St. Daniel’s Academy in Society Hill, studied voice at Flora McDonald College in Red Springs, N.C. and then moved to Columbia and graduated from Draughon’s Business College with a degree in Secretarial Science. Her career included working for the National Bank of South Carolina and for some of Columbia’s most prominent gynecologists. She had many friends at these places of business who were colleagues, customers and patients who treated her with respect and dignity at all times.
She was a member of the Columbia Women’s Club when it was first organized. As a longstanding member of Kilbourne Park Baptist Church, she sang in the choir, played the piano for the adult Sunday school class and participated in many of the activities of Sunday School, Joy Group and church work.
Her husband and two children predeceased her; Paul A. Smith, Sr. in 1999, Jane Smith Staton in 2001 and Paul A. Smith, Jr. in 2016. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Betty Simpson Smith of Hilton Head, S.C.; four grandchildren, Chris Staton (Laura) of Lexington, S.C., Shannon Meyring (Robert) and Brittany Esparza (Ryan) of Atlanta, Ga. and Lindsay Scott (George) of Anderson, S.C.; and four great-grandchildren, Eliza Griffin, Jack Griffin, Alexander Meyring and Emme Staton. She also had many nieces, nephews and cousins who were close to her over the years.
Services will be held on Monday, April 17, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Kilbourne Park Baptist Church, 4205 Kilbourne Road, Columbia, SC 29206, with Pastor Terry Smoak officiating. The family will receive friends and extended family in the Church Reception Hall at 1:00 p.m. prior to the service. She will be buried with her husband and daughter at Elmwood Cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled by Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, 3926 Devine Street, Columbia, SC 29205. Flowers sent to the funeral home or donations made in her memory to her church are appreciated by the family. We thank you for caring about her and keeping her in your prayers these past seven months.
