Elsie F. Johnson, 91, of Raleigh, peacefully entered into Eternal Rest with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at her home in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Born in Cidra, Puerto Rico to Gilbert and Maria Figueroa from Castile, Spain, Elsie spent much of her childhood in New York, returning to Puerto Rico during World War II as a young adult. While working at the Roosevelt Roads Naval Base in Puerto Rico, her sister Florence introduced her to a dashing and charming US Navy sailor named Carl Johnson from New Bern, North Carolina. Despite the separation caused by war, he continued to court her through letters for many years before their eventual marriage.

Many have credited their union with the pioneering introduction of the foreign import automobile business on the US Eastern Seaboard. Together, they built a business and a family that continues successfully today.

Elsie often said she was a person who did not like to "chit chat." So her conversations often led to thought provoking, lively discussions and sometimes debate. She was always faithful, informed and sincerely honest when she discussed her favorite topics: politics, business principles, religion and family values. A strong and wise woman, she put her energy and effort into enriching every relationship in her life and into making every situation she encountered a little better.

Loved beyond measure and deeply respected, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, confidant and mentor, Elsie F. Johnson will be sorely missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Carl David Johnson Sr.

Elsie is survived by children: Anita Johnson Meredith and husband Billy, C. David Johnson Jr and wife Dr. Holly Johnson, Sunny Johnson Lewis and husband Pastor Rick Lewis; brother, Vincent Figueroa and wife Carmen; grandchildren, Jeremy Bridges and wife Kendall, Alexandra Rudder and husband Steven, Kyle Meredith and wife Jessie, Morgan Beeson and husband Stephen, Reed Hopkins, Mariah Bridges, Rickie Moran and husband Tres, Carl D. Johnson III and wife Alena, Chase Johnson; and nine great grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors from 12 noon until 2 PM Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at Raleigh Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, 7501 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27612. A funeral service and celebration of her life will follow beginning at 2 PM.
