NICOSIA, Elvira, 97, of Tampa, joined her beloved husband Nunzio in heaven on Sunday, July 16, 2017. She is survived by her sons Santo and Roberto; her three grandchildren, Lydia Brassington, Lara Cartaya, and Nicole Esposito; her nine great-grandchildren, Isabella, Roberto, Christopher, Dominic, Matthew, Anna Maria, Luca, Michael, and Juliana; and her beloved nieces in Italy – Antonietta (Nuccia)Distefano, Anna Maria Cucinotta, Carmen Di Martino and their families. Elvira was born May 2, 1920 in Catania, Italy. She married Nunzio during World War II. Elvira attended the University of Catania where she excelled in classical studies, and became a loving educator and teacher to her children and pupils. In the early 1960s, she and her family moved to Rome where they enjoyed a rich and fulfilling life. Elvira and her husband left Italy and moved in 1988 to the United States where their sons had established successful medical and academic careers. Elvira led a life centered around her family and was a master of Southern Italian cuisine. She joyfully taught her sons and granddaughters the art of Sicilian cooking. The memories of wonderful dinners will stay with her family and friends forever, and the many recipes she wrote will be a lasting gift to current and future family generations. Above all, Elvira was a loving wife, a caring mother and a role model to her grandchildren. May her memory last forever! Visitation and funeral Mass will take place at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, 15520 North Boulevard-Tampa, on Thursday July 20 at 10 AM and 11 AM, respectively. Entombment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery at 12:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to LifePath Hospice of Tampa.
