Emagean (nee Hudson) Devereaux, 89, departed this world from her home in Cape Coral, on March 24, 2015. She is missed so dearly by us, her family, as well as many others whose lives were touched by hers.
On November 2, 1925, Emagean's parents, Myrtie and Claude Hudson welcomed their fifth child into the family in Pontiac, Michigan. She joined her 4 older siblings Cordele, Nellie, Leslie and Mary and later became big sister to Audrey and Ralph. She is predeceased by her parents and siblings and her husband John.
Emagean married John Edward Devereaux on October 2, 1943 in Dalhart, Texas. A month later, as her Army Air Corp husband left to join the war effort in Europe, they said goodbye, never imagining they would not meet again until 17 months later when he returned from the war and 15 months in a German prison camp. They started their lives together in Pontiac, Mi. Their first son, John Richard, was born in 1946 and Patrick Edward in 1949. During the 1960's Emagean attended a nursing program in Pontiac, Mi. where she earned her degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked in hospitals, doctor's offices and in private care until 1995. After moving to Florida, Emagean become involved with Goodwill Industries initially because of the assistance and eventual employment provided to son John. She served on the Board of Directors for many years, and also as the President of the Building Board, providing housing for handicapped people. She retired a year ago. In May of 2014, the most recent Goodwill housing complex in North Fort Myers was dedicated in her honor and is named the Jean Devereaux Apartment Complex. Jean was her nickname, the name by which most people knew her.
Emagean is survived by her son John Richard, son Patrick Edward and wife Nancy (nee Mason) Devereaux, three grandchildren, Kelley (nee Devereaux) and David Kaminsky of Fort Myers, Matthew and Lauren (nee Michelini) Devereaux of Ponte Vedre, Fl., Alexander Devereaux of Atlanta, Ga., four great grandchildren Harrison William Kaminsky, Norah Ann Kaminsky, Max Patrick Devereaux and Hailey Elizabeth Devereaux and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Open House will be held on April 11, 2015 at the home of Patrick and Nancy Devereaux from 1pm until 4pm. Please contact Nancy at nandevereaux@gmail.com for details. For those planning an expression of sympathy please consider a donation to Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida.
