Emily Lindstaedt Pollander, 48, died on Saturday, January 2, 2010 after a long and valiant battle with ovarian cancer. She died at home in Fort Wayne, Indiana surrounded by her family. Born in Indianapolis, Emily graduated as valedictorian from West Vigo High School in West Terre Haute, Indiana. She received her BS in Nursing at DePauw University where she was a member of the Sigma Theta Tau National Honor Society of Nursing and a member of Delta Zeta Sorority. At DePauw, she served on student medical teams serving in Peru and Guatemala. Emily received her MS in Nursing from the University of Kentucky as a Nurse Practitioner where she won the May Sanders Award recognizing outstanding contributions to nursing care. Emily's work experience in the nursing field included the Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati and Family Nurse Practitioner with the Marion County Indiana Health Department. Emily served as Director of Healthy Babies Program at People's Health Center in Indianapolis and later was a Nurse Practitioner at Women and Family Services in Defiance, Ohio. Emily was a dedicated member of the community and a tireless volunteer. She had volunteered at Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control. She had great love for the outdoors and led nature hikes for school children at Fox Island County Park. Emily was a member of the Fox Island Alliance Board and was the 2008 Alliance Volunteer of the Year. She obtained her Indiana Master Naturalist certification and has passed on her love of the outdoors to her boys. She and son Logan together were named 2005 and 2006 Animal Caretakers of the Year by Allen County Parks. Emily loved beachcombing on Bald Head Island, NC where she could always find the tiniest, most elegant shells. There she supported conservancy efforts and made a second home with her family. Emily was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Fort Wayne and also attended St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. At Aldersgate, she served as Chair of the Preschool Board for many years and enjoyed teaching Sunday school. Emily also pursued a variety of creative and athletic hobbies. She was an avid and talented knitter whose creations will be cherished by recipients for years to come. Emily was a runner and completed two half marathons. She finished the 12K Bay to Breakers Race in San Francisco in 2008 while undergoing chemotherapy. Wonderful mother, devoted wife, irrepressible spirit! She is survived by loving husband, Gregg S. Pollander, MD and her two adoring sons, Logan and Parker, parents William and Marilyn Lindstaedt, brother Bill Lindstaedt and sister Carolyn Kirby, eleven nieces and nephews and parents-in-law Edward and Maryann Pollander. She was preceded in death by stillborn daughter, Julia Noelle. Calling hours are Friday, January 8, 2010 from 6pm - 8pm at McComb & Sons Covington Knolls Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Road.
