Sister Emma Dunne died at St. Mary of the Pines, Chatawa, Miss. early Monday morning, May 18, 2009.

Morning prayer and visitation will be at 9:00 a.m., on Thursday, May 21, at St. Teresa Church in Chatawa. The Eucharistic Celebration will follow at 10:30. Rev. Thomas Potts, SVD will be the celebrant.

Mary Emma, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Dufrene) Dunne, was born in New Orleans, La. on February 8, 1932

Emma began her studies to become a School Sister of Notre Dame in St. Louis in 1949 and pronounced her vows as a member of this congregation in 1952. Subsequently she earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in education. During her early years as teacher in New Orleans, Houston and Dallas elementary schools she was known as Sister Thomas Marie.

After almost a quarter century as teacher and administrator in the schools, Sister Emma engaged in parish ministries in Louisiana and Texas for five years. During the following decade she administered Wynhoven Apartments for retired persons in Marrero, La..

Since 1999, Sister Emma was an educator of adult learners at Notre Dame Education Center in Canton Miss. As she prepared for the 2008-09 school year, illness caused her hospitalization. From October until the time of her death, she was in residence in the community of the School Sisters of Notre Dame at St. Mary of the Pines.

Pallbearers are from the Charles R. Brill Council of the Knights of Columbus. Burial will be in the Chatawa Cemetery.
