GOODYEAR LAKE - Eric James Thorsland "ET," 74, of Goodyear Lake, passed away Friday, Jan. 27, 2017, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Eric was born May 12, 1942, in Oneonta, to Casper and Joyce (Parslow) Thorsland. He was raised at Agony Acres on Mill Creek Road in Otego. He graduated from Otego School and immediately entered the workforce. Eric worked for the American Labor Union No. 643 for 33 years, working on many projects such as I-88, Bassett Hospital, Otsego County ARC and multiple municipal buildings. He was also good at mason tending and worked at numerous other jobs in and around Oneonta area. Eric married Jessie (McLain) on July 26, 1997. They shared 33 happy years together, 19 as husband and wife. His hobbies included fishing, playing guitar, harmonica and recovering pool tables. Eric was also a member of the Milford Fish and Game Club. Eric was the original "American Picker." He is best known as a connoisseur of garage sale treasures. If there was something you were looking for, he would find it. He was a man of few words, quick-witted and loved a good joke. He was known for his generosity, big heart and love he had for his family. His home was the gathering place for holidays and family get-togethers. Eric was predeceased by parents, Casper and Joyce; siblings, Martin, Jon (Pete), Sonja; and brother-in-law, Ray Davie. He is survived by his wife, Jessie and their son, Martin; three children from his first marriage to Barbara (Hungerford) Johnson, son, Colin; and daughters, Stephanie (PJ) and Christine (Joe) Harby; his grandchildren, Tyler, Tanner, Reba, Rebecca (Kurt), Garrett, Hannah, Hailee; great-grandson, Karson; "adopted"sons, Tom Todd and Donta Sherwood. He is also survived by his, brother Mike (Barbara); sister-in-law, Judy Thorsland; sister-in-law, Sabrina (Randy) Knapp; and their daughter; Jennifer; aunts Arlene Haig and Kaye Foley; several cousins, nieces and nephews. Eric's life will be celebrated at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 4, at Lettis Auction Room, 23 Reynolds St., Oneonta, followed by a reception in his honor. Donations may be made in Eric's memory to Catskill Area Hospice or Milford Fire Department.
