Erma Jean Payne, entered heaven peacefully on September 27, 2017.
Erma Jean was born on May 13, 1924, in Wilson, Oklahoma to Lexie (Batt) and George Howard Thompson. Her youth and formal education were spent in Oklahoma (the state she loved). In 1947, Erma Jean met the love of her life, William V. "Bill" Payne in Ardmore, Oklahoma. They married in 1948 and spent 57 years of devotion to one another until Bill's passing in 2005. Erma Jean had never moved before she married Bill, after which she embarked on a life-long adventure that took them throughout the southwestern United States and South America. As long as they were together, Erma Jean and Bill were "home". They established their most permanent residence in Edmond, Oklahoma, where they lived for over 40 years and were members of First Baptist Church, Edmond. Erma Jean spent her last years in Plano, Texas near her family. Erma Jean was caring and generous, steadfast, loyal, a strong woman of faith, a loving daughter, wife, mother, sister, aunt (Jeannie) and friend. Erma Jean was happiest when she was making others happy, be it through cards, phone calls or baking cookies, pies or cakes. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Erma Jean was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers Charles (Marianne), Donald, Bob, Bill and Jerry Lynn Thompson. She is survived by her daughter Laura (Dennis) Dronzek; sister, Wanda Couch; brothers, Russell D. (Latralle) Thompson and Roger (Jo) Thompson; sisters-in-law Lela Thompson, Eddie Thompson, Colette Thompson and Nell Nutter. Erma Jean is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and their children as well as dear friends. We will forever cherish our memories of Erma Jean's laughter, generosity, and most of all, the enduring love that she bestowed upon us. The family will greet friends at Hahn-Cook-Street & Draper, 6600 Broadway Extension, Oklahoma City, on Friday, September 29 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 30 at 11:00 a.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery.
