Estel (Shorty) Martin of Tye, TX went to join his wife, Viola Martin in the house of our Lord on November 21, 2016. He died in peace at home with his loved ones. He was born on September 10, 1928 at home to Robert Henry Martin and Lillie Mae (Thompson) Martin of Lavaca County, Texas. He married his first and only love, Viola Quinney Martin on May 10, 1951. The two first met in church when she was 7 years old and he was 12 years old. They were blessed to share 61 years, 5 months, and 10 days together until the Lord called her home. Over those years there was love, laughter and some tears. They had eleven children but lost their son, David as an infant.

Estel chose to work in the oil field and did so for 48 years. He was proud to have his three sons follow in his footsteps, even prouder to work with them and teach them what he knew. But he was just as proud of his seven daughters. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and PaPa. He had a passion for hunting, being outdoors and working with his hands, and he enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren all of the things he knew. He enjoyed horse back riding, farming and boxing.

He loved to spend time with his family telling stories of growing up on a farm in Stockdale, of boxing with his brothers, or how he met Viola, or stories of his adventures in the oil field. At 88 he still loved horses and cows and planted his last garden this year and preferred sitting outside to being in a house. He enjoyed going to the zoo and feeding the ducks at the park. He even managed a road trip to Maine and one last hunting trip.

He enjoyed being busy and after retiring from the oil field he continued to stay busy working with his grandson and son-in-law until he was 86 years old. But his first and utmost love was for his family, his wife, children and all of his grandchildren. He was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need as long as he was able to. His family was blessed and grateful to have him for as long as they did and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. It was an honor and a privilege to call him Daddy Pops, Grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin or nephew.

He leaves behind is brother, Willard Martin; and sister, Lena Mae Quinney both of Abilene; his son, Donald and wife, Pam Martin of Tye, TX; daughters, Sue Goodgion of Gardiner, Maine, and Barbara and husband, Steve McVey of Tuscola, TX; son, Delton Martin of Abilene, TX; daughter, Patsy Martin of Gardiner, Maine; son, Dan and wife, Joanna Martin of Abilene, TX; daughter, Dale and husband, Dean Nowell of Gardiner, Maine; daughter, Mary Morris of Tye, TX; daughter, Estelle Penney of Tye, TX, and daughter, Pearl and husband, Troy Penney of Merkel, TX; as well as 25 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; and too many nieces, nephews and cousins to count.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Viola Martin; their son, David Martin; their grandson, Brandon Edwards; and son-in-law, Dannie Goodgion; along with his parents; and brothers, Hill, Harvey, Melvin, Curtis and Daniel; and sisters, Hazel, Bee and Fannie Mae.
