Mrs. Esther Grady "Tutu" Whisnant, 87, of Morganton, passed away on Monday, December 21, 2020.
Esther was born April 16, 1933 in Burke County, to the late Frank McDowell and Martha Ann Queen Grady. She spent her life working for the community in various roles. Her passion was caring for children which she fulfilled for over two decades at (state registered) Esther Whisnant's Daycare. These children and their parents became part of her honorary family. She was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church for over 60 years, with strong family ties to the church. She was a self-taught pianist and organist, playing for the church, for family, for the kids at daycare, and for herself and her love of music. She was an avid reader who filled her life with dance and laughter. She was known for her delightful sense of humor and her unwavering joy of life. She also nurtured her plants, filling her home and garden with colorful blooms. Her biggest pride and joy were her grandchildren. They were always well-fed in her home - nobody ever left hungry. She instilled kindness, faith, and grace in her family. She was a true matriarch.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Todd McDowell Whisnant, four brothers, one sister, and most recently her husband, Paul Revere "Pop Pop" Whisnant.
Survivors include her three children; Paul Gregory Whisnant and wife Connie of Morganton, Barbee Ann Whisnant-Burgess and husband Riley of Davidson, and Robin Paulette Whisnant Powell and husband Darwin of Valdese. Also surviving are five grandchildren; Madeline Victoria Burgess (John Fawcett) of Raleigh, Sara Victoria Burgess (Thomas Barnes) of Wilmington, Samuel Paul Powell of Valdese, Holly Victoria Burgess (Yoshi Teters) of Davidson, and Paul Benjamin Whisnant of Morganton. In addition she is survived by one sister, Leonia Poteat.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Pleasant View Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Pleasant View Baptist Church, 1834 US 70, Morganton, NC 28655. An online guestbook and obituary is available at www.heritagefuneralservices.com
Heritage Funeral Service & Crematory of Valdese is serving the Whisnant family.
