Eugene Allen Hitt, 93, passed away peacefully at Huntsville Hospital on Saturday, January 6, 2018. LCDR Hitt was preceded in death by his parents, Earl Lee Hitt and Jesse Sarisona Saltz Hitt, his brother Frank Hitt, and his wife of over 50 years, Norma Jean Bledsoe Hitt.
LCDR Hit is survived by his daughters Lois A. Beppler of Lake St. Louis, Missouri and Linda S. Kamerman of Huntsville, Alabama, his son Daniel L. Hitt of Warrenton, Missouri, six grandchildren: Joshua Kamerman, Tanya Kamerman, Erin Beppler Cooper, Tiffany Kretzer-Kamerman, Christopher Beppler and Zachary Kamerman, five great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
LCDR Hitt was the gunnery officer on the USS Iowa in World War II and the second in command of a missile frigate in the Korean War. Following his military service, he earned four degrees from the University of Texas but concentrated his work in mechanical and aerospace engineering. He spent almost 70 years in aerospace engineering and founded his own consulting engineering company, Hitt and Associates in St. Louis, Missouri.
In many ways, his work was his life. As a consulting engineer, he designed the nose gear for the F4, the F15, the F18, the Learjet and most of the aircraft produced by Beach, Piper and Cessna. After retiring from consulting engineering, he moved to Huntsville, where he started a new career as a senior test engineer directing launch operations from Wake Island at the age of 75 and then as the Vice President for Engineering of a Huntsville aerospace company where he worked, daily, until he was 92.
While in college, Gene was a tight end for the University of Texas football team, playing with other distinguished Texans including Tom Landry. Although born in Oklahoma, he remained a devoted Longhorn fan for the rest of his life. Gene learned to fly while he was in the Navy and remained an active pilot until he was 80. He loved baseball, the theater, waterskiing, amusement parks and rollercoasters.
Visitation for Gene Hitt will be held on Friday, January 12, 2018 at Valhalla Funeral Home from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM. The funeral service, conducted by Dr. Jimmy Jackson, will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 11:00 AM in the Valhalla Chapel.
