Eugene Washington Stuart of Greenville, SC died Saturday, July 8, 2017.



Born in Passaic, NJ on January 30, 1932, he was the son of Eugene W. and Marion Fryer Stuart. As a boy he acquired a passion for sailboats which was exercised while living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and later in Florida, Georgia, and Greenville.



He graduated from Duke University and went on to receive his Master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After graduation he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy and was sent to the Western Pacific for three years of service on the aircraft carrier Boxer.



After returning to Atlanta and working for a few years he met his future bride, Claire Anne Hanner. They were married December 3, 1960.



Most of his working career was spent with Edgcomb Metals Company. He rose to be Vice-President of the Southeastern Region and General Manager of the Greenville plant.



Since retirement, he enjoyed playing golf with the Good Old Boys at the Greenville Country Club, and duplicate bridge with friends at the Cascades. He and Claire traveled extensively visiting many countries of the world.



Gene is survived by his wife, Claire, of the home. Children include Carol Flynn (Joe) of Lakeville, CT; Anne Hayes (Dion) of Richmond, VA; Dr. Gene Stuart (Kathryn) of Columbia, SC; Jim Stuart (Kim) of Greenville; also eight grandchildren, Conor Flynn, Claire Flynn, Elizabeth Hayes, Katie Hayes, Sara Stuart, Caroline Glenn Stuart, Morgan Stuart, and Anna Caroline Stuart.



He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Anderson of St. Petersburg, FL.



A memorial service will be held at 2pm Saturday, July 15, 2017 in the Markley Chapel at Christ Church Episcopal with a reception to follow in the McCall Parlor.



In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ Church Episcopal or to the South Carolina Chapter of Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
