PENACOOK-Evelyn E. (Emerson) Merrow, 98, of Penacook, NH died peacefully after a brief illness, surrounded by her family in
Portland, ME, on Sunday October 8, 2017. Evelyn was born on June 17, 1919 in Lancaster, NH to Neal and Jennie (Ashe) Emerson.
Evelyn was an amazing woman who started her life over at age 40 after divorcing her husband, Murray Merrow of Lancaster, NH. She
learned how to drive, went to secretarial school, and started what would end up as a 30 year career with the NH Fish and Game Dept. as the Executive Secretary of the Wildlife Division, in Concord, NH. She loved spending time with her family, often telling her friends stories about what all of her grandchildren
and great-grandchildren were doing in their lives. She loved the outdoors and was an avid snowmobiler and lifetime member of the
Canterbury Sno-Shakers Snowmobile club. She was also an 84 year member of the Grange. As Past Master of the Mt. Prospect Grange
and a longtime member of the Daniel Webster Grange, Evelyn loved working with the Grange to support her community. She loved the White Mountains, walking in Bear Brook State Park with her dog Boots, and photographing covered bridges. In her younger years,
Evelyn could be found golfing at Plausawa Valley in Pembroke or even deer hunting in her hometown of Lancaster.
Members of her family include her sons, Roger and his wife Janice of South Portland, ME, William of Hillsborough, NH and
James and Patricia Merrow of Concord, NH; 6 grandchildren, Deborah Merrow Farr, Deanne Merrow Sterling, Donna Merrow
Jauregui, Holly Merrow, Edward Merrow, and Matthew Merrow; 10 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two children, Bruce, age 2 and a new-born daughter who would have been named Anne and two grandchildren, Tammy Merrow and W. Bruce Merrow.
A graveside service will be held at Summer Street Cemetery in Lancaster, NH on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 1:00pm.
