Callender – Evelyn M. Piltingsrud, 94, Des Moines, formerly of Callender, passed away Thursday, March 26, 2015 at Trinity Center Luther Park, Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. on Monday, March 30, 2015 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Callender with Rev. Jon Rollefson officiating. Burial will be in Callender Cemetery. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, 2015 at Palmer Funeral Home, Gowrie.
Evelyn is survived by her daughters, Darlene (Dennis) Baugh; Kathy (Paul Nelson) Piltingsrud; grandchildren, Nicole; Anders; Krista; Karen (John) Johnson; Robin
(Mark) O'Sullivan; Matt (Kandice); great-grandchildren, Ethan; Leila; Phoenix; Cerys; and Rhys.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil; parents, Milla Rhyne Gustafson and Edwin Leonard Gustafson; son, Neil Piltingsrud; sister, Eileen Gustafson Bangert Smith; brother, Ancil Leonard Gustafson; niece, Donna Piltingsrud Kern; brothers-in-law, Don Bangert; Milton Smith Sr.; Arnold (Marcelle) Piltingsrud; Burnett (Elizabeth) Piltingsrud; sisters-in-law, Elida (Orin); Deloris (Ivan) Hunter.
Evelyn Maxine Gustafson Piltingsrud was born at home on January 12, 1921 in Fort Dodge. She was baptized on July 3, 1921 and confirmed in 1935 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge by Rev. Magnus Nodtvedt. At a young age, Evelyn moved with her parents to a farm in Onalaska, WI, returning later to Fort Dodge. She graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High School in 1938. Evelyn was working for Dr. Blomberg when she was asked to work for the County Recorder's Office, later becoming Deputy Webster County Recorder. She was appointed Webster County Recorder, holding that position until she retired in 1949.
On September 19, 1948 Evelyn married Virgil L. Piltingsrud at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge and made their home farming near Callender.
She became Librarian for the Callender Public Library for 10 years and later served as Librarian for Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.
Evelyn was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church of Callender and belonged to the Women's WELCA, holding many offices: President, Vice President, Secretary, etc. She was also President of the School Band Mothers at Prairie Community High School and Leader of the Roland Rockets 4-H Club
for 10 years. Volunteering was very important to her with too many projects to list. Evelyn loved singing and sang in the Messiah with her husband, Virgil, for many years. Evelyn and Virgil enjoyed dancing, spending many evenings at the Bohemian Hall, and were members of a square dancing club. She also was an accomplished seamstress. She will be missed by her many friends and family.
