Dr. Floyd Harold Holmgrain Jr, Lt. Col., USAF, (Retired) of Mitchellville, Maryland, age 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 16, 2017 in Annapolis, Maryland. Floyd served as an officer in the United States Air Force for 28 years where he received numerous awards and commendations. He also served as a negotiator for the Organization of American States (OAS) in Central America during the 1960's. Following his retirement from the military, Floyd served 18 years as the Executive Director of the National Academy of Opticianry, and is credited for saving and revitalizing the organization. Floyd was a 30-year member of the Prince George's County Rotary Club, a 32nd Degree Mason with the Arcana Masonic Lodge of Gordon, Nebraska, and a Shriner with the Abou Saad Shrine Temple in Panama. He was a member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church of Bowie, Maryland for nearly 40 years. He sat on the board of directors of the Prince George's County Water Board and the Holmehurst Homeowners Association. Earlier in life, Floyd was active in the church as an usher and member of the choir, and served as Committee Chairman for his sons' Boy Scout troop.

He was an intelligent, hard-working, charitable and caring man. Outgoing and gregarious, he loved to socialize and turn strangers into friends. He enjoyed golf, hunting, shooting, fishing, the Nebraska Cornhuskers and Washington Redskins, traveling to Cabo san Lucas, tinkering on his cars and house, the Washington Post, a cup of black coffee, and a good cigar. He was a graduate of Gordon High School in Gordon, Nebraska, where he played basketball and was in the band, glee club, and drama club. He then attended Chadron State Teachers college in Chadron, Nebraska, where he was Valedictorian. Floyd went on to receive his Master's Degree in Education at Stanford University, and his Doctorate of Education at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He later graduated from the USAF Air War College.

Floyd was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Marlene, his parents, Floyd Sr. and Lela Holmgrain, and a brother, Ernest Holmgrain. Floyd is survived by his sons Floyd III "Tripp" Holmgrain and Randal Holmgrain (Sarah), sister Phyllis Simpson, brothers Milton (Marie) and Everett Holmgrain (Joan), granddaughters Amanda Birchell (Jesse) and Arya Holmgrain, grandson Alexander Holmgrain, and great-grandson Lukas Birchell.

Funeral to be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, July 22, 2017 (visitation one hour prior) at St. Matthews United Methodist Church, 14900 Annapolis Road, Bowie, MD. A reception in his honor will follow at 4:00 P.M. at the Annapolis Yacht Club at 12 Dock St., Annapolis, MD.
Internment will take place at 11:00 A.M., Monday, July 24, 2017 at Lakemont Memorial Gardens, 900 W. Central Ave., Davidsonville, MD.
