Frances Hope Brown Sessoms was born in Erwin, NC on March 21, 1918, and was the youngest of four children born to Annie Ward and Milton Cross Brown. She was educated in the public schools of Erwin. In 1931, she married Charlie H. Caldwell, and they had two sons, Charles Brown and Edward Hasque Caldwell. She later married Curwood Sessoms, and together they had two children, Barbara Ann and Curwood Sessoms, Jr.

She worked for Burlington Industries for forty-nine years in various roles; her last position was as the Insurance Coordinator. During her working years and after retirement, she was an active member of Erwin United Methodist Church. She was an active member of the Erwin United Methodist Women, Choir member, Sunday School teacher, Circle Chairman and attended various study groups. On the community level, she worked in the Gift Shop at Good Hope Hospital, was a member of Erwin Garden Club and Erwin Tree Board and served as Registrar for Erwin. She lived in Erwin for the majority of her life and only moved to Chapel Hill in 2006 to live with her daughter due to declining health. She loved the people and the town of Erwin and always called Erwin home. She was a caring and compassionate woman who loved her church, her family, and her community. She made many friends during her 99 years of life and was kind to everyone.

Frances died peacefully on June 10, 2017.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Curwood; her brothers, Fred Ward and Harold Cross Brown; and her sister, Mary Elizabeth Oettinger. She is survived by her children, Charles Brown Caldwell (Tennie), Edward Hasque Caldwell (June), Barbara Sessoms Gillmer, and Curwood Sessoms Jr. (Carol). She had six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, ten nieces/nephews, and a large extended family. She was proud of her family and loved each one of them unconditionally.

The family is grateful for the care of Frances by Dr. Robert Pennington and his staff, Duke Hospice, and Nurse Care of North Carolina.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at Erwin United Methodist Church starting at 10am, with a funeral service at 11 am. Burial of her ashes will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Dunn, NC.
