LaNell was born March 13, 1927, in Belcherville, Texas to the late Roy and Rue (Gaydon) Fitts. She passed from this life on Saturday morning, September 3, 2016, in Abilene, Texas.
She attended Ringgold High School, received her bachelor's degree from Midwestern University, and her master's degree from Hardin-Simmons University. She went on to have a illustrious teaching career with the Abilene Independent School district. She was a teacher for 33 years, of which she was a special education teacher for 26 of those years. LaNell was the VFW Teacher of the Year for the 1976-1977 school year. She was a member of the state and national teacher's associations and the Texas and Abilene Retired Teachers Associations, and was a life member of the TSTA. She was also a former member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Founder's Lions Club and the Caps Baptist Church.
LaNell was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert Thompson; a daughter, Randee Dempsey; two sons, Steven Thompson and Coby Thompson; and two brothers, Joe Fitts and Roy C. Fitts.
Survivors include two daughters, Raynel Rush and husband, Harry of DeSoto, TX, and Robin Coar; a son, Nathan Thompson of Clifton, TX; a son-in-law, Larry Dempsey and wife, Karen of Brownwood, TX; grandchildren, Robby, Casey and Joshua Rush, and Clint and Taylor Dempsey; great-grandchildren, Becky Carriker, Sarah, Jon and Ryan Rush, Emma, Rachel, Chloe and Cayden Thompson; and great-great-grandchildren, Anna Rush, Andy Carriker, and Tyler and Tatum Dempsey.
