Frances Colvin Welden, 96, died in New Orleans on Friday, Sept. 8 after a brief illness. She was known and loved for many years as the “Butterfly Lady” of uptown New Orleans, bringing her love of butterflies and caterpillars to children in the area’s elementary schools as well as to adult friends and neighbors. She was instrumental in the creation of the Butterfly Walk at City Park. She was the daughter of Fred Colvin and Ellen Frances Merkl Colvin, both deceased. She was the widow of Arthur L. Welden, Jr., Professor of Botany Emeritus at Tulane University. She is survived by her loving sons Charles Woodson (Amy) Welden and Arthur Frederick (Karen Mann) Welden, and grandchildren Linnea, Corwin, and Alexander. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Southern Lepidopterists’ Society, southernlepsoc.org; or to Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana, no-hunger.org, 700 Edwards Ave, New Orleans, LA 70123.
