Frances Elaine (Petersen) Schmid, 89, passed away peacefully with her children at her side on Saturday, January 6, 2018.
Know to most as "Frannie", she was born in Albany, NY to Gladys and Ray Petersen. She moved with her family to Phoenix in 1937. She attended North High School and what was then known as Arizona State Teacher's College. Married to her lifelong love, Walter John (Jack) Schmid in 1950, together they raised 3 children. To us, she was and always will be Mom. Mom was an avid reader of the obituaries every day, so it is important we do right by hers. There may not be a list of awards and credentials that make up her existence here on earth, because most important to her was to be a loving, caring, generous person to every life she touched. She held life-long friends back to her school girl days. She would stay in contact with them regularly and would always make the effort to reach out and see them as much as possible. Growing up, the mom's in our neighborhood would gather each morning for gossip and coffee. There was a large window in the dining room where she could keep track of everything. She always had to know what was happening around her. She had a keen eye and never missed a thing, even to the very end. Her family was her pride and joy. Our needs were always put before hers and she was never afraid to let us know if we had veered off course. Words cannot express how special of a person she was to everyone around her. Almost every night her bedtime ritual included a bowl of ice cream. She couldn't sleep without it and would say her cardiologist said at her age she could have as much ice cream as she wanted!
Frannie is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Walter John Schmid; her beloved brother and sister Ray P. Petersen Jr, and Betty Kennedy. We must also include her dearest life friend, Jere Ehmann. She is survived by her three children and their spouses; Larry Schmid, Patty George, Nancy Schmid, 4 granddaughters and 7 grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Thursday January 11th from 12:00 noon - 1:30 PM at Phoenix Memorial Park and Mortuary, 200 W. Beardsley Road, Phoenix, AZ 85027, she will be laid to rest with dad at 2pm at the National Cemetery of Arizona. A celebration of life will be held at 3pm at the Deer Valley Airport Restaurant. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Arizona Humane Society as she would never miss an episode of "Pets on Parade"
