Lexington - Francis H. Herndon, 89, entered the church triumphant on Wednesday May 3, 2017. The lives he touched through his generous spirit and commitment to service and philanthropy are too numerous to count.

Francis was born in Bamberg, S.C. on June 23, 1927, the son of Hubert W. and Bertha K. Herndon. He was a U.S. Navy veteran having served his country during World War II and graduated from the University of South Carolina where he competed on the football and swimming teams. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ann Buggel Herndon as well as his two sisters Aurelia Herndon and Mary H. Stedman. Left to cherish his memory are son, Francis H. Herndon, Jr. (Jodi) of Atlanta, Ga.; daughter, Scottie Herndon Trapp (Danny) of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, Davis and Libby Herndon, Catherine Trapp, and Simmons Trapp Purdy (Russ); and brother-in-law, Jack Buggel.

Following a private interment, there will be a Service of Witness to the Resurrection at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 6, 2017 at Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Columbia. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

Francis retired as a Senior Vice President at First National Bank of South Carolina and as a Vice President with Marsh & McLennan. He was a friend and mentor to many across the state in the banking and insurance communities.

The contributions made by Francis to his community, his church and the many who were fortunate enough to know him are beyond measure. In March of this year he received the 75 Year Veteran Award by the Boy Scouts of America, which culminated a legendary level of commitment and service to scouting. He had previously been recognized as a Vigil Member-Order of the Arrow, Silver Beaver, Silver Antelope and Distinguished Eagle Scout. While scoutmaster of Troop 10 for over ten years he awarded over 3,600 merit badges and had 70 scouts achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a member of the Executive Board of the Indian Waters Council for over 30 years and served as Council president, commissioner and representative to the national Council.

Another beneficiary of Francis’ passion for service was the American Red Cross where he served as Chapter Chairman; Chairman of the Blood Program and in 2016 was recognized for having donated over 475 pints of blood.

Francis Herndon was a Southern gentleman who greatly valued his Christian heritage and upbringing. He served the Presbyterian Church faithfully in many capacities including Chair of the Board of Deacons and Clerk of Session of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, Moderator of Congaree Presbytery and Treasurer of Trinity Presbytery and as a commissioner to the Synod and General Assemblies. He was also a charter member of both the Richland Sertoma and the Palmetto Clubs and enjoyed over 56 years of golf and dining at Forest Lake Club.
