Furman Ray Gray, 92, born October 1, 1924 passed away Monday, March 13, 2017.



He was a son of the late Rev. W.I. Gray and Maybelle Land Gray of Seneca.



He was predeceased by brothers, Wilton Bruce Gray of Seneca and Clayton “Ned” Gray of Greenville.



He is survived by his wife, Frances Rochester Gray, of the home; his sons, Furman “Kip” Ray Gray, II, of Greenville and Kevin Mark Gray of Long Island, NY; his grandchildren, Furman “Trey” Ray Gray, III, of Greenville and Ashley Gray Johnson and husband, Mike, of Greenville; his great-granddaughters, McKenzie and Chloe Johnson, MacKenzie Davis and Meredith Gray of Greenville; great-great-grandson, Rivers Johnson of Greenville; brother, Dr. Otha Lamar Gray and his wife, Elizabeth, of Augusta, GA; sister-in-law, Gretchen Price Gray of Greenville.



Ray was Valedictorian of the Class of 1941 at Oakway High School. Ray enlisted in the US Army in 1944 and served under General George Patton in Western Europe during World War II. After returning home, Ray enrolled at Furman University and graduated 4th in his class with honors. He became a licensed CPA immediately after graduating from Furman and continued to practice accounting until his death. Ray earned an MBA from the University of Georgia. Ray taught at Clemson University for 26 years and retired as Professor of Accounting. He also was a part-time instructor at Furman University (MBA Program) and Greenville Business School prior to teaching at Clemson. Ray’s passion was teaching and developing young, promising accountants.



Ray was a dedicated, faithful member of mother church, Central Baptist Church, and daughter church, Earle Street Baptist Church, for over 60 years where he served in various capacities of leadership. He formerly served the Annuity Board of the Southern Baptist Convention and promoted the Adopt An Annuitant Program which provided retirement plans for retired ministers of SBC.



Ray married the love of his life, Frances, on October 4, 1947 and enjoyed nearly 70 years of blissful marriage.



Visitation will be held from 1:30pm until 2:45pm with the Celebration of Life following at 3pm on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Earle Street Baptist Church in Greenville.
