Garret John Torney, born November 8, 1986 tragically departed this life on June 20, 2017.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 18, 2017, at Saint Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 2715 Horse Pen Creek Road, with Father Joseph Mack officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 3901 Forest Lawn Drive.
He was born and raised in Greensboro and Summerfield, NC. He attended Hardgrave Military Academy in Chatham, VA. Following his graduation in 2005 he selflessly gave himself in service to his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. After graduating from Marine Corps Basic Training at Parris Island, SC he joined Company C, 4th Combat Engineer Brigade out of Lynchburg, VA where he received specialized training as a Combat Engineer. He was called to serve his country abroad with a deployment to Operation Iraqi Freedom and once again in Afghanistan where he worked to identify and dispose of improvised explosive devices and his unit was the most successful within their region. After his return home, he continued to serve his Reserve unit.
Garret found a family at Crown Automotive where he found a niche selling cars. He will always be remembered for his larger than life personality, infectious charisma and witticism, unending loyalty, and patriotism. He enriched the lives of all those around him. He is survived by his parents, Dennis Torney of Greensboro and Catherine Torney of Summerfield, and his sisters Caitlin Torney of Knoxville, Tennessee and Evin Torney of Wake Forest, and his favorite nephew Robert Virgil Ford IV of Knoxville, Tennessee.
