Gary Edward Mertens, 77, of Mesa, Arizona, died December 11, 2017 after a lengthy struggle with Parkinson's and Lewy Body Dementia. He was born August 29, 1940 to Clarence Jacob Mertens and Mildred Pearl Munger in Inglewood, California.

He was married to Mary Susan Hallquist for 7 years and they had two sons. Gary was married to Eileen Carol Garlow for 23 years and they had one son. Gary was married to Cheryl Lee Mertens for 22 years and had 2 step-daughters.

Gary graduated from Morningside High School, Class of '58, in Inglewood, California.

He worked for Standard Oil of California, holding several leadership and training positions. In 1972 he moved to Mesa, Arizona, became self-employed and opened Gary's Chevron gas station. He retired in 2002.

Gary was community minded and served on the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Pioneer Possee for 12 years in Search and Rescue. He was a member of the Mesa Optimist Club. He also sponsored a baseball team and was a scout leader with the Mesa Boy Scouts.

Gary is survived by his wife, Cheryl Mertens, his sons Patrick Mertens and Stephen Mertens, his step- daughters Jennifer Harris and Heather Barndt. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild, his brothers Don Mertens and Bob Mertens, sister-in laws Lois Mertens and Joan Mertens.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Mildred and his son Michael Mertens.

A Celebration of Life service is planned for Friday, January 12, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Love of Christ Lutheran Church, 1525 N. Power Rd, Mesa, Az 85205. Pastor Steve Talmage will be officiating.

There will be a luncheon following the service.
