He served in The United States Air Force during the Korean War in Clovis, New Mexico. He met his sweetheart, Bonnie, of almost 60 years on a blind date at the Gold and Green Ball on February 16, 1957. They were married and sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on April 3, 1958.

Gary loved sports and was an avid golfer. He loved basketball, baseball, and football. In 1956, Gary helped his team win the LDS All Church Basketball Tournament. As a lifetime Chicago Cubs fan, he was thrilled when his Cubs won the World Series last year.
