After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Gary Lee Dobernecker passed away peacefully at the Tabitha Cove Hospice House in Lincoln, Nebraska on December 17th, 2017.. He had been called and visited by many family and friends who brought him much happiness in his last days. He also appreciated the outstanding healthcare he received by many doctors, nurses and the hospice house staff. Gary was born July 30th, 1946 in Atlantic, Iowa to Lester and Francis (Pieken) Dobernecker. He attended school in Atlantic then moved and graduated from high school in Odebolt, Iowa. After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy as a jet engine mechanic serving overseas during the Vietnam War. He took a short break from military service then joined the Nebraska Air National Guard followed by the Texas Air National Guard and the Air Force Reserve at Luke Air Force Base, Phoenix, Arizona. He served his country for 28 years and always carried a passion for aviation. If there was an airshow or an aviation museum he was sure to be there! In the early 1980’s he received his Airframe and Powerplant certification in Houston, Texas then moved to Phoenix, Arizona to work for Southwest Airlines and Honeywell building and repairing jet engines. He was also a certified Master Technician for Honda. Gary married Shirley A. Thompson on September 3rd, 1967 in Storm Lake, Iowa. They were married 50 years and were able to return to Lake Okoboji, Iowa this year where they had honeymooned. Gary and Shirley enjoyed traveling together over the years visiting many states and several countries. Gary lived life to the fullest through the simple pleasures of spending time with family. He had an infectious smile, gracious attitude and was known to call for no reason at all except to chat. His friendly nature and generosity will be greatly missed. Survivors include his wife, Shirley of Phoenix, Arizona; Daughter Elizabeth (Scott) Micek, Grandchildren, Joshua, Avery, Austin and Alexis Micek all of Lincoln; Brothers John Ratcliff, Robert Dobernecker, Lester Dobernecker, Donald “Sparky” Conroy, Lowell Taylor Jr, Roger Dobernecker, Bill Talk, Mike Talk, and Robert Talk; Sisters Diane Gibson and Tracy Kingery; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Lou, sister Debbie and step-brother Duane. The celebration of Gary’s life with military honors will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, January 5th, 2018 at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home. Open house will be held at the Micek home from 2 – 4 p.m. Private family inurnment will be held at a later date. Memorials can be made to the family or to the Strategic Air and Space Museum.
