George E. Armstrong, 94, a decorated World War II Navy veteran serving on the USS Bunker Hill and retired NYC Fire Lieutenant, died peacefully at home in Altamonte Springs, Fl on Monday, November 27, 2017.

George was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY to Robert and Jenny McLain. He enlisted into the US Navy in 1942 and served as an Aviation Radioman and Aerial Gunner on the Curtiss Helldiver. He was honored with numerous medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Metal (5 Golden Stars). George humbly declined the offered Purple Heart after his plane went down in the South Pacific. He was spotted on a raft by a Navy Ship after 24 hours. Tragically, his pilot never resurfaced.

After the war, he worked for the FDNY for 22 years where he retired as a Lieutenant. He moved with his family to Orlando, Florida in 1973, where he continued his career in various occupations including the US Navy Training Center in Orlando, for 7 years.

He was a dedicated member of St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church and belonged to the Irish American Club. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, cooking, reading the newspaper and watching football together.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Mary; sons, Michael (Carla), Brian, Jim; daughters, Ave and Patricia (Gregg); his grandchildren, Kaitlin and Erin; and great grandchild Abigail.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, December 14, 2017, at Baldwin-Fairchild, 994 E. Altamonte Springs Drive. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:45 a.m. Friday, December 15th, at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, 869 Maitland Ave, Altamonte Springs, 32701.
