PITTSBURGH (AP) — Dr. George Magovern, a Pittsburgh cardiovascular surgeon who pioneered artificial heart valves, has died. He was 89.

Officials at Allegheny General Hospital, where Magovern introduced many of his cutting-edge techniques, say he died Monday.
