George Vakalis, 87, a resident of Westmoreland, NH and former resident of Keene, NH passed away peacefully at the Maplewood Nursing Home on Friday, December 29, 2017.

He was born in Brooklyn, NY on September 19, 1930, the son of Angelos and Angela Bouhagier Vakalis. After losing his father at the young age of 7, George was quickly thrown into the workforce to help support his family. In these formative years, he was forced to learn the value of hard work and swiftly developed a passion for achievement.

His many accomplishments include graduating Phi Beta Kappa from CCNY, graduating from Command and General Staff College, serving our Nation as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army, serving as the head of the Chambers of Commerce in both Worcester, MA and Brattleboro, VT, and (after over-seeing the development of several major industrial parks in the Northeast), establishing his own commercial real estate and development company, "George Vakalis Co." in Hartford, CT.

In his spare time, he was a gentleman farmer and his hobbies included breeding German Shepherds and caring for a small variety of livestock on his 55 acre Suffield, CT farm.

On May 16, 1953, he married the love of his life, Mary Moore. Together, they built a beautiful family rooted in the values of hard work and strong Christian faith. George was, above all, a family man. His strength and perseverance will forever be an inspiration to those he leaves behind.

He is survived by his wife: Mary Vakalis of Westmoreland, NH, two sons: Malcolm Vakalis and his wife Gail of Warwick RI and David Vakalis, Sr and his wife Janet of Somers, CT, his daughter: Diane Vakalis and her loving companion Steve of Keene, NH., his sister Helen Davies, ten grandchildren: Amy, Raymond, Michael, David, Julie, Erin, Jonathan, Michelle, Andrew and Rachael, six great-grandchildren, his brother-in-law: Garrett Moore and sisters-in-law: Dorothy Lavault and Gloria Brady as well as several extended family members. He is predeceased by his sisters: Jane, Theresa and Christine, his brother-in-law: Thomas, and sisters-in-law: Susan and Karen.
