George W. Truckey, 83, of Marquette, passed away Saturday evening, November 26, 2016 at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, Minnesota. He was born February 2, 1933, in Marquette to the late Willard and Siiri (Piirto) Truckey. He attended St. Lawrence Seminary in Wisconsin for three years before graduating from Bishop Baraga High School of Marquette in 1950. He was employed as a meat cutter with the Red Owl Stores and as a machine shop inspector at the Heil Company in Milwaukee, WI prior to serving in the US Air Force for four years during the Korean Conflict. In 1956, after receiving his military discharge, he attended Northern Michigan University earning a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and a Master of Arts degree in school administration. He also received the Educational Specialist post-graduate degree at Michigan State University in school administration. His educational employment began in 1960 and included teaching mathematics at Munising High School and at Newberry High School in Michigan and at Wrightstown High School in Wisconsin. He began a fourteen year career as a high school principal beginning in Cedarville, moving to Ravenna High School in Muskegon County and then to Clio High School near Flint. In 1978, George accepted a Superintendent of Schools position at Wakefield and six years later became superintendent of the Munising Schools where he retired in 1992. After retirement he served twice as interim superintendent in Big Bay for the Powell Township Schools and for the Gwinn Community Schools. George married Suzette Gollinger on December 28, 1957 at the Sacred Heart Church in Munising. They happily raised 7 children and became grandparents to 15 and a great-grandchild. During his career, George was active in and held office in many organizations including the Elks Club, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Lions Club, Rotary Club, Men's Chorus and church choirs, City Councilman, Marquette Golf and Country Club, Northern Michigan University Alumni Board, and State and National Principal & Superintendent Associations. George traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada and especially enjoyed camping, hunting, boating, golf and served as a football official for many years. He also enjoyed playing piano and guitar. He is survived by seven children, Mark (Jackie) Truckey of Breckenridge, CO, Ann (Robert) LaCosse of Duluth, MN, Mary (Dan) Shaw of Duluth, Paul (Keli) Truckey of Marquette, Daniel (Leigh) Truckey of Marquette, Andrew (Emily Hames) Truckey of Duluth and Bruce (Lisa) Truckey also of Duluth; 15 grandchildren and a great-grandchild; sisters, Mary Apple of Marquette and Barbara Truckey of St. Johns, MI; brother and sister's-in-law, Robert Apple of Marquette, Mary Rene Truckey of Munising and Ruth Truckey of Sault Ste. Marie, MI; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Suzette in April 2016; and siblings, Patricia Wiseman, Robert, Willard and John Truckey. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 2, 2016 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Bishop's Room at St. Peter Cathedral. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 in the church with Rev. Msgr. Michael Steber officiating. Interment will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post #44. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Lawrence Seminary, 301 Church Street, Mt. Calvary, WI 53057.
