Gerald D. Southard (Jerry), 81, of Charleston, SC, passed away peacefully on Saturday November 11, 2017 at Hospice of Charleston. Born in Union, SC to Roy Vernon and Margaret Southard and lived most of his life in Charleston, SC.

He loved baseball, Nascar, photography, history and Westerns. In his spare time he enjoyed carpentry work and made many furniture pieces for his family.

He attended North Charleston High School and then briefly transferred to Summerville High School. After high school, he worked for Asplen Tree Company, Summerville Waterworks, Delong Sheet Metal Shop and then Charleston Naval Shipyard.

He was married to Marilyn Louise Richter from 1956 until 1976 and they had 3 beautiful children together.

He volunteered for service in the US Army in 1958-1960. His basic training was in Fort Jackson, SC and he was stationed in Germany where he met Elvis Presley for coffee once. After his service in the Army, he served in the Army Reserves from 1960 - 1964 and he went back to work at the Charleston Naval Shipyard which took him to Rota, Spain, Florida and back to Charleston. He was also very proud to help restore the USS Yorktown. Before retirement in 1990, he was a Shipyard Production Superintendent and General Foreman.

In 1979 he began dating his partner, Pamela Dobbs, who was by his side through thick and thin. He traveled to many places and visited many of the 50 states and National monuments.

He was a proud and loving father of his biological children Michael Southard, of Hanahan, Stephen Southard, of West Ashley and Lisa Southard Jones and her husband Michael Jones, of Elko, GA and step-father to Charles Schaefer, of Trinity, NC and Kathryn Dobbs, of Park Rapids, MN.

Jerry is also survived by his partner and best friend of nearly 40 years Pamela Dobbs, of North Charleston; his brothers Eugene Southard (Inez), of Summerville and Roy Suthard (Billie), of Goose Creek; his grandchildren Jordan Jones of Tuscaloosa, AL, Joseph Jones of Goldsboro, NC, Cora, Bear and Gavin Schaefer of Trinity, NC and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents Roy Vernon Southard and Margaret Medford Southard and many aunts and uncles.

Visitation will be on Thursday, Nov 16, 217 from 12:30 to 2:30 pm with the Life Well Celebrated Service at 2:30 pm at the Carolina Memorial Funeral Home. Burial to follow at he Carolina Memorial Park, 7113 Rivers Ave. North Charleston. Memorial donations may be made to either St. Jude's Children's Hospital, the Charleston Humane Society or One80 Place (an organization for homeless Veterans).
