Gerald (Jerry) Louret Stout, 92, of Bloomington, Indiana, passed away in his home surrounded by family on May 29, 2017
Born on February 20, 1925 to Owen and Martha (Bennett) Stout, Gerald spent his early years in and around Orange County, Indiana. After graduating from Paoli High School in 1943, Gerald joined the United States Navy and attended Officers' Training at the University of Notre Dame. He later served in the Pacific until the end of World War II.
In 1948, Gerald married Mariella Clements, (a marriage that lasted 69 years), and moved to Bloomington, Indiana where he began his career as an electronics engineer for Indiana University. In 1966, Gerald became head of the IU Electronics Department where he remained until his retirement in 1989. The highlights of Gerald's tenure at Indiana University included development of multiple patented equipment designs, collaborating with IBM on one of the first computerized college classrooms, and analysis of rocks brought back from the moon. He was also quite proud of a unique security system he designed using air pressure to protect the Old Oaken Bucket from Purdue marauders. Throughout his life he often combined his well-developed sense of humor with his engineering expertise to design and build gadgets and gifts that amazed and amused family and friends.
Gerald's passion, aside from his family, was music. His beautiful tenor voice could be heard singing regularly in the Bloomington area. He was a member of the choir at St. Marks United Methodist Church, the Bloomington Pops chorus, and he was a charter member of the Bloomington Chamber Singers, with whom he sang for 40 years. You could also find him singing Barbershop Quartet music with his friends on trains, in parades, in concerts with The Hartsmen, and sometimes spontaneously in restaurants or on street corners.
His musical ability extended beyond his singing voice. He played a little flute, a little piccolo, a little tuba, and was quite accomplished on the clarinet, which he played in the Bloomington Community Band for decades.
Gerald grew up in a family that forever encouraged the love of learning. That is a legacy that he has passed on to his children and, through them, to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Gerald is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Harold Stout, and his sister-in-law, Ruthie.
He is survived by his wife, Mariella; his children, Susan (Duane - deceased) Richards, Debbie (Doug) Thieman, Chalice (Rhonda) Stout, and Karen (Tom) Blake; grandchildren Michelle (Abram) Bissell, Melissa (Jon) Storm, Philip Blake, and Martha Thieman; great-grandchildren Ella and Ava Bissell, Lizzy and Lorelei Storm, and step great-grandchildren Ellionna, Amya, and Abel Garcia; sister Marie (Ron-deceased) Newlin and step-sister Roxanne (Terry) Kemple.
A celebration of Gerald's life is planned for Saturday, July 1, 2017 at 3:00 PM at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 100 North Highway 46 Bypass in Bloomington, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Mark's United Methodist Church Choir or the Bloomington Community Band.
Arrangements are entrusted to Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home, 4150 E. Third St., Bloomington, Indiana 47401.
