Gilbert C. Canasta, 81, of New Bedford passed away surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 after complications from surgery. A lifelong resident of New Bedford Gil entered the United States Air Force in December of 1951 where he completed his high school education. He is a graduate of Kinyon Campbell School of accounting. Gilbert began his distinguished career in California at March Air Force Base and went on to many tours of duty all over the world, including serving in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. Gil was a small arms Expert Marksman, received a commendation medal for meritorious service in a successful mission in Vietnam 1966-1967 and distinguished himself by meritorious service as chief administration section of the 2018 Communication Squadron at Otis Air Force Base May 1968 - Dec 1971 1st Oak Leaf Cluster medal. He retired after 20 years of service in January of 1972 after protecting our great country for more than two decades. He was an umpire with the International Federation of AFC umpires and the NBC Association of approved umpires in 1964.

After his retirement from the U.S.A.F. Gil was employed with Shawmut Bank and New Bedford Institution for Savings Bank in downtown New Bedford as an armed security supervisor until his retirement in 1996.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 48 years, Linda M (Dias) Canasta, formerly of Eugenia St. He is predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Herminia and John Canastra, his mother Mary (Canastra) Moco of St Michael, Azores, his father Silvester Cardozo of Lisbon, Portugal, brother Chuck Cardoso of New Bedford and sister Barbara (Canastra) Medeiros of Dartmouth. In addition to his wife he was the loving father of Michael R. Canasta and his wife Kelly of New Bedford, Michelle (Canasta) Tavares and husband Bob of Dartmouth, Kimberly Craig of Houston, Texas and Tamara Hendrix of West Palm Beach, Fl. Loving grandfather to Hannah (Canasta) Lima and husband Dylan Lima, who is serving in the marines, Jason Rodrigues (Deceased), and Abigail, Emilyn, Timothy and Lily Tavares.

Visiting Hours on Tuesday, October 11th from 4:00 - 8:00 PM at Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Dartmouth, 230 Russells Mills Rd. Funeral from Waring-Sullivan Home on Wednesday, October 12th at 9:00 AM. Funeral Mass at St. Mary's Church, Dartmouth at 10:00 AM. Burial in South Dartmouth Cemetery. Donations can be made to the Disabled Veterans National Foundation, which Gil was a great supporter of.
