Gloria Sheckells, long-time resident of Harness Creek, Annapolis, passed away July 13, 2017. She was 94. Born in Baltimore, MD, she spent periods of her childhood on Long Island, NY and Philadelphia, PA. She came to Annapolis in the 1940's where she met and married her husband of over 60 years, John Sheckells, who predeceased her in 2009. She joined Calvary United Methodist Church in February 1953 when on State Circle, and filled many roles over the years as Sunday school teacher, choir member, committee member, and Stephen Ministry among others. Missions and Outreach was her passion. She championed the fight along with others against slots in Maryland and was an ardent advocate for social injustice, which most likely set a fire her later devotion to liberalism and Democratic politics. She believed fervently in "peace with justice" and exemplified the command to love and embrace others as yourself. She was employed by Anne Arundel County, working in the Circuit Court as Administrative Assistant to Administrative Judge Matthew S Evans, retiring after 18 years of public service, to welcome the job she loved most, grand-mothering. She loved to read and enjoyed story time with her granddaughter, instilling love of books and knowledge. She also enjoyed music, a challenging game of Bridge, and the serenity of the creek on which she lived. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Warner (husband Paul), granddaughter Meggan Sombat (husband Sonepheth), four great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and sister-in-law and longest friend, Mary Jo Stonesifer. A memorial service will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church on Rowe Blvd., Annapolis MD on Sunday, September 10 at 2:00 p.m. with a gathering at the Harness Creek home afterward.
